Insights from Live with Byron Katie

I attended a Conversations with Byron Katie event today, and it was very rewarding.

There is no doubt that Katie’s technique of “The Work” leads to peace, connection with self, and alignment with a Universe built on (of) love.

Some of my favorite quotes from Katie today include:

“Our nature is to love.” Byron Katie

I see this applying to coaching in the principle that things that are true for us feel good, and things that are not true for us, do not feel good. In light of Katie’s statement, we could say that things that make us feel bad are going against our nature, because they are (seemingly) causing us to “not love.”

“Who needs god when you have your opinion.” Byron Katie

Hehe, this is a good one. She is calling us out here on our insistence that we know best. We have every right, and we are omniscient enough, to know exactly what “should” be. This is also known as arguing with reality! When we are bitch-slapped with the truth that we don’t know everything, we hopefully can wake up to the fact that it is not our place to run the Universe.

“Sadness is a tantrum, a war with what is.” Byron Katie

A tough pill to swallow, but true. Think about a 2 year old throwing a tantrum. They don’t want to accept reality and are having a hissy-fit. Sometimes 2-year-old’s can change their reality with a tantrum if their parents bow to the pressure. In real life, as adults, tantrums do nothing to change reality. They only cause suffering, and delay the effective engagement with reality.

Great show, Byron Katie!
